Attach Spider umbra to a reasonably sized hydra, pop the hexmage and at end of turn the hydra is a monster.

Maybe keep a vines of the vastwood spare for ping/burn.

Wouldn't the Hydra die? It would become a 0/0

yes the hydra will die before the additional counters will get on it, not to mention spider umbra does not protect is as the hydra is not getting destroyed.  Think of it like a balloon, if it gets popped its destoryed it it  just sits the air leaks out and it gets smaller and smaller until it is no more, but it is not destroyed

The spider umbra keeps it 1/1 while the counters are gone.
