You must have on the field:
► Blessed Orator (or Leyline of Vitality)
► Aether Flash
► Aphetto Runecaster
► Illusionary Mask

When you pull out a Relentless Rats card, play it face down for free as a 2/3 creature (instead of 2/2 thanks to Blessed Orator / Leyline of Vitality). When it comes onto the field, it takes the damage from Aether Flash and gets turned face-up. When it gets turned face-up, you can draw a new card which is likely a new Relentless Rats card. ...you see where I'm going with this? (For more fun, replace all of your "Relentless Rats" cards for "Cheatyface" cards. Be sure to record the look on your friends' faces!)

Yeah, I didn't see ANY counter-ruling against what I'm doing with Illusionary Mask.
It's not a "morph" effect - it's an effect that mimics "morph" and I can only turn a creature card up if it's dealt (or dealing) damage.

good execpt for the fact you need to pay the cost of the rats to put it face down.  from gatherer, bolded the important part

If you use the ability to cast a creature card face down, you must keep track of the amount and types of mana you spent on {X}. If that creature spell is moved from the stack to anywhere other than the battlefield, the resulting creature leaves the battlefield, or the game ends, the face-down card is revealed. If its mana cost couldn't be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on {X}, all applicable penalties for casting a card illegally are assessed.

if your using 0 as the cost of x, then you are not paying the mana cost so the card is illegal and would be removed. so for relentless rats X needs to be 3 or greater.

PS if your wondering how this rule for the card ties in with the orignal notice the "you still have to spend" part of the orignal.

So in other words, unless I cough up three black mana per creature, I can't do this as I intended...?

God damn it, Wizards, you need to phrase your cards better. Enough of this "ambiguous wording" bullcrap.

Please bear in mind that Illusionary Mask is an extremely old card, from the first set of Magic. Back then they were still new to it (hell, MTG was the first CCG) and the templating/wording was pretty bad on a lot of cards.

Also note that the wording on this site is generally based on the wording of the printed card, and the database is not kept up to date with the modern wording.

For the proper wording, use Gatherer, especially on old cards. Here is the current entry for the mask:

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=201199

(X): You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on (X). If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.

Don't blame Wizards, blame your lack of common sense. If there were an artifact for 2 that let you play every creature for 0 with no drawbacks, don't you think it would be a little more popular?

Anyhow, Zark is right, use the gatherer. Anytime I'm doing anything MTG related I've always got it open in another tab.

Actually, no, because it's in response to a question, albeit with another rhetorical question.
I really, really don't think my grammar should be up for question here... (¬ 3¬)
