Turn 1:Play a swamp and play pithing needle declaring the name of Deaths Shadow.
Turn 2:Play any land necessary and tap the previous swamp for a 13/13 with no negative effects.

What am I missing here? Death's Shadow has no activated ability. I don't see any way for Pithing Needle to apply to this.

it doesn't. sorry XsXs but sky is correct, Deaths Shadow is a static ability, ie its always one.  the needle can only affect activated abilitys, which is written like this (Cost:Effect), note the : between cost and effect, here are some examples:

That's a static ability, not an activated ability.

I think he was thinking of triggered abilities included in pithing needle...
