A friend of mine thinks if a player were to play a Blaze for 10 colorless and a red and used Izzet guildmage's pay 2R ability to copy it for twenty damage, would this work? On technicality blaze's converted mana cost is one, but does the value of X figure into the converted Mana cost as the spell is being played?

The spell would be copied, but when it does, the X will be counted ass xero, and as you copy the spell, the card says it does X dmg to target creature or player. When it is copied the X is 0 making the copied spell do 0 dmg.
