Title: Proxies in Casual Play

Hey guys. I know this has probably been discussed a bit but I wanted to see what the general opinion was.

So about once or twice a month a group of friends and I get together to play some magic. We usually do EDHbut we also do planeswalk and whatnot. It's really casual and a lot of fun. The most competitive we get is if one of the guys buys a box and we do a draft.

Lately I've wanted to try and make my EDH deck a bit more fun. I play that bird wizard and my deck is based on the bounce effect for creatures entering play. There are a few cards that I have wanted to add to my deck that I think would be fun but I have very little $$$ to spend on magic. Every now and then I'll buy some fun cards from a local shop but that's because he's local and I'm weak willed.

I read a little bit about people making proxy cards and thought I would give it a try. Honestly...it came out better than expected. I did four cards the other night and they look pretty good. The only thing that could make them better is if the black border was a bit thicker but that's another post. Anyway, I'm not making super OP cards. I mean I made a cloudstone curio, stryonic resonator, eternal witness and a ghostway. Cards that I think would spice up my deck.

My question is if you were playing purely casual would it bother you if your friends had a few proxied cards?

Our playgroup has a few members who are in a similar situation as you. So our rule is that cards can only be proxied if they cost $10 or less. Some cards regardless of price are always ok to proxy like zendikar sac lands.

It shouldn't bother anyone really...

With all due seriousness what is the end goal for any game?

The Answer...

TO WIN!

Now how do you want to win? Crushing a lesser opponent due to their lack of a few pieces of cardboard? Or would you rather face a much more worthy foe?

If you are a competitive gamer then the answer should be obvious...

Time to get all Kamina up in this piece...

"Proxy whatever you like...because no matter what card you proxy for...I'll still beat you down. Just who the hell do you think I am!? I am the bodacious leader of team cardgamin' I don't know when to quit buying packs and I only play the best cards. When they speak of that man who had his student loans deferred to buy more cards they speak of me, Spike!"

Card Shop owner interjects, "Spike, you have been disqualified for poor conduct and telling all the new players they can proxy cards so they...well they say you called them a bunch of...turbo noobs who suck so badly they should kill themselves and put the suicide notes on myspace so nobody will ever read them..."

Spike: :C

FIN...

Just an update. We had some good games and the guys were cool with me playing with proxies considering the current status of my earnings. Basically as long as I'm not making ratchet ass power cards they are cool with it. I will post some pictures for you guys when I get a chance because they turned out better than I had thought. Fun times...MYRS FOR THE WIN BITCHES!!
