So if I have 2 clerics with "{T}: Prevent the next 1 damage to target creature or player" and I double block a massive creature (say 18/18), and activate their abilities on themselves, can that massive creature kill only 1 of my clerics? Alternitively, if that creature has trample can it even kill either of them.

My logic is that because, as of M2010, you now only choose the order that lethal damage is assigned. When calculating lethal damage you do not take into acount damage that will be prevented. Thus a creature will only be assign enough damage to kill it. Thus preventing a single damage will save any creature except the last one.

In most cases, your two clerics vs the 18/18 are probably going to die, unless your opponent is less familiar with the newer combat rules:

-Two clerics vs 18/18, no trample: assign 9 damage to each, both die.

-Two clerics vs 18/18 trample: assign 2 damage to each cleric to cover the prevention shenanigans, and 14 to you.

-Two clerics vs 18/18 trample with inattentive controller: 1 damage to each cleric (prevented by abilities), 16 damage to you.

So you can still over-assign combat damage then?

Man new rules really get to me. First deathtouch now this. I miss banding. Though the only new rule I dislike is the legends rule changes.

Concur, Twogun... My Clone's commander killing ability is severely nerfed.

Sadly, banding wouldn't help your 2 cleric scenario. Because they would be dealt damage as 1 creature, 18 damage - 2 for prevention would still equal 16. 16-2 for toughness is 14 damage to you from trample. Now, if banding was still around, this is purely figurative, band Vampire Nighthawk with a first strike creature, that 18/18 is dead before it gets to assign damage.

Banding's only real feature was that you control damage assignment rather than its controller. Your banded creatures still deal their damage with proper timing.
702.21g Banding doesn't cause attacking creatures to share abilities, nor does it remove any abilities. The attacking creatures in a band are separate permanents.
So the creature with deathtouch does not gain the first strike or double strike of anything its banded with.

Actually, looking at that a little closer now, you can't prevent the damage as a response to it happening anymore. Goddamn Wizards of the Coast and them changing rules and shit without asking veteran player...*mutters to himself as he walks away*
