edh is by far my favorite format, so understandably i'd be pretty stoked if they were going to release another commander set. does anyone have any idea if a new set is in the works?

I've heard nothing yet.

The Singleton format IMHO makes the game type far more accessible to new players than the cookie cutter build of "have 4x of each spell card in your deck" mindset.
Sadly, although I've created my own Commander deck and played with it, I don't really understand how people can do successful color splashing without utilizing green for mana acceleration. Maybe its because I'm poor and don't want to shell out the big money for proper dual lands.

Artifacts my friend. Artifacts.  There are actually quite a few real good ones that are still very cheap to get. Go online or to the local shop and get some of these for cheap; Spectral Searchlight, Felwar Stone, any of the Ravnica CoG block Signets, even the Talismans from Darksteel, they ping you for colored mana use, but if you have some life gain in the deck to counter 5-10 points then itll get you ramped up until you can use it for just the colorless mana without life ping. The Obelisks from Alara are real good as well for 3+ color decks.

Yes, the lantern is a great one to. I had just listed a few of the REAL cheap ones people can afford easily and the ones that are often overlooked as useful. There are many more yet, go on to Magicthegathering.com/gatherer and you can search up ANY card in Magic's existance. EDH is fun as shit though and to name just one or two wouldnt help much, go on there and narrow it down by type, text, or even CMC.
