So nobody was doing modern so I decided to do one. To determine if a card is budget the criteria I based it on is that it needs to cost below $2.00 according to the pricing on Sar City Games.
Rather then just making a deck I decided to take a top down approach and modify an existing one, in this case Yuuya Watanade's World Championships Jund build.
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
2 Blood Crypt
1 Forest
1 Marsh Flats
1 overgrown tomb
2 Raging Ravine
1 stomping ground
2 swamp
4 tree top village
3 twilight mire
4 verdant catacomb
Creatures
4 Bloodbraid Elf
4 Dark confident
4 kitchen finks
4 tarmogoyf
Spells
4 inquisition of kozilek
1 jund charm
4 lightning bolt
2 maelstrom pulse
2 terminate
2 thoughtseize
4 liliana of the veil
Ok we will come back to the land base lets do creatures first. Ideally we would like to keep with the aggro/discard theme that is going. So lets look at Bob.
Dark confident is unarguable one of the best cards in the format, which is why it has such a high price tag, since we want to keep card advantage, the easiest way to do this is go with its enchantment breathen-dark tutelage. Even though we have low costing cards, againest aggro the excessive life lose with multiples can hurt alot so we want enough to draw it early but not to get bogged down - 3 of these
Kitchen Finks- an aggressive 3 drop that keeps creates a life swing when it comes into play. we already raised our curve with the dark tutelage, so we would like to stay in the 3 drop slot and would like to keep the aggression. Really the only close replacement is Vampire Nighthawk-got to go with 4
Tarmogoyf - Ok here is where we need to make some decisions. goyf is way out of range of the wallet so we need to look at some aggressive 2 drops to replace it: stranglegeist is a solid option some suggest skinshifter since it allows a turn 3 4/4 attack. Personally when i look at the orignal deck and see 4 green cards and 3 of them our not budget, i just don't want to use green. So I;m going with Jotun Grunt. Its a 4/4 two drop, and yes the cumalitive upkeep is expensive but with your discard and the amount offetch lands in the format he can stay well fed. Plus he fucks reanimtor and the like, and he will always be stronger then your opponents Goyf. 4 off
Bloodbraid -2 spells for 4 mana on a 3/2 hasty body. Lets face it nothing compares. So Im just going random here since I want an agressive creature and I like the 3 power level porcelian legionare. A solid first stricker that can be played with 2 mana of any color, aloow us to make up for the mana rise in tutalege. 4 off
So on to spells
Inquisition of kozlik- while limiting the options of cards Distress makes a decent replacement, and while at it thoughtseize can be replaced ith Raven's crime, while it lacks to option to choose what is being discarded, it gives the later game land draws a purpose.
jund charm and maelstorm pulse - while our deck has some hand removal we need to add some field removal as well. Maelstrom pulse is nice because it hits permanets. Black removal only hits creatures but looking at white O-ring also for the removal of pesty permanents-3 go in
lightning bolt and terminate-with only 1 red in each it is possible to splash for them and they are worth it and since we are going to splash red we can add in 3 blighting to improve our discard suite.
With only 6 slots left the question is do I want to add additional attackers or increase the disruption. Luckly I can do both- 4 hippies going in.
and for the last 2 slots, when playing black with discard and some controlling aspects I just think pox, but I can't play that so got to go with 2 smallpox
Now the Lands-really at $2 a land you don't have alot of options maybe a couple evoling wild, terramporhic expanse, 4 transguild promande since we are doing 3 colors, highly recommend ghost quarter, everyone uses dual lands it wreaks them
So here is the final build
Lands
3 transguild promande
3 mountains
3 plains
8 swamps
2 ghost quaters
3 evoling wilds
creatures
4 vampire nighhawks
3 joten grunt
4 porclien legionare
4 Hyponotic scepter
Spells
3 distress
3 ravens crime
3 oblivion rings
4 lightning bolts
2 terminate
3 blightning
3 dark tutalage
Thanks for reading
2 smallpox
