Okay, me and my friend are arguing on this fact

He's playing Hearthfire Hobgoblin and enchant it with Scourge of the Nobilis. He attacks with both and paid the mana to boost it.
I defens with a token 1/1.

So my thinking is this : The creature strike first, my creature dies. the second strike goes in the void.

But he is arguing that he still gain life for both strikes.

Can you help me figure this out ?

First strike damage will be dealt, your defender will die and your opponent gains life.  Then normal attack will occur, however, your defender is no longer be there so no damage will occur.

Lifelink gives life based on the damage dealt, since there was not creature there, no damage dealt, so no life gained

Its on the reminder text for scourge for lifelink -damage dealt - no damage

For something more offical here you go http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=magic/rules  your looking at rule 510.5

510.5. If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike (see rule 702.4) as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that had neither first strike nor double strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

basically first and double strike give two damage steps, the 1/1 died in the first damage step so is not there in the second to be dealt damage.

From the Comprehensive Rules (as of Magic 2010)

  • 702.4. Double Strike
    • 702.4a Double strike is a static ability that modifies the rules for the combat damage step. (See rule 510, “Combat Damage Step.”)
    • 702.4b If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that didn’t have first strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.
    • 702.4c Removing double strike from a creature during the first combat damage step will stop it from assigning combat damage in the second combat damage step.
    • 702.4d Giving double strike to a creature with first strike after it has already put first strike combat damage onto the stack in the first combat damage step will allow the creature to assign combat damage in the second combat damage step.
    • 702.4e Multiple instances of double strike on the same creature are redundant
First strike damage would be assigned to the blocking creature, then normal combat damage would again be assigned to the defending creature, since it would no longer be there, the damage is removed from the stack (invalid target) and no life is gained by your friend and you take no damage.

The only thng to look out for with double strike are trample creatures. You'll still take that damage.
