Title: I need some assistance

I've been out of MTG for a while so I need help with something...

How does one build a standard Red/Black deck for when New Phyrexia rotates out?

I'm not playing until the rotation so I kinda get a fresh start on my usual control/disruption style gameplay...So far this is all I've managed to figure out as far as starting points for a build...

Vexing Devil (Pick your poison...I like it.)

Duress (Disruption)

Rakdos Return (Nasty as hell IMO).

Zealous Conscript (Disruption/potential win if your opponent has a fatty).

Vampire Nighthawk (Do I need to justify it?)

Gloom Surgeon (Mr. Invincible)

Mizzium Mortars (Board wipe/removal)

Tragic Slip (YAY! ^^)

Dreadbore (Terminate/Walker kill epic!)

Slaughter Games (Uncounterable Memoricide? Sideboardable...to the max).

So that's all I can think of as far as red/black stuff (Post Rotation of course.)

So...anyone have any ideas? I'm personally at a loss at what to try...

First of all, why Gloom Surgeon? And maybe try Exquisite Blood. That way you can try to counteract the loss of Unleash once RtR comes out. GO RAKDOS!

Gloom Surgeon for two reasons...

1.Flashback (Faithless Looting, Devil's play, ect).

2. Can swing without worrying about damage.

Hmmm...Exquisite blood would be nasty in a creature based build...

So I guess that leaves me with 2 choices...

Creature Karate

Non-Creature Karate

And given how weak non-creature spells have gotten...well creature based looks to be my best bet...

I agree with you Jester, Creature decks rule in BR. I got back into Standard only recently, and have had tremendous success with a BR Heartless Summoning Build (i wanted to start out cheaper, and I don't like netdecking). It's an easy and affordable deck to make, and I think that RtR has some solid creatures to put into that deck type. The good cards lost from M12 and Mirrodin are Inferno Titan, Solemn Simulacrum, Perilous Myr, and Urabrask the Hidden, but you now have Carnival Hellsteed, hopefully a cool Rakdos legend, Thundermaw Hellkite is pretty solid, and I'm confident that there will be even more. A set of Heartless Summoning is really cheap to buy.

I plan on going Grixis Control/Disruption/Delver with the new Niv-Mizzet as my big heavy hitter (for obvious reasons).

@Jester-Don't forget about Inquisition of Kozilek's cousin from Avacyn Restored.

Appetite for Brains? I actually don't like that card when it comes to control. Inquisition was nice because it got rid of immediate threats with the 3 or lower thing. Duress and Despise (sad its leaving) were way better, but I suppose we have Distress now.

Main-boarding it wouldn't hurt if he has an extra slot available or he can at least side-board it. It'll get rid of the Guilds' Legendary Creatures.
