Hey all,

I'm thinking of making a fun Modern red instants/sorceries-only kind of deck. I know there is a lot of ramping for red, but I am drawing a blank right now. Help Scotty out?

if only you wanted creatures... i would suggest a dragon deck... but then again dragons are not budget friendly creatures...

Searing Blaze! 2 mana for 2 damage, what about 2 mana for 6?

Sphere of the Suns is ramp, but it is not as fast as Desperate Ritual or Seething Song. Also, Braid of Fire could be worth checking out.

I didn't even think about Braid of Fire. Wonderful enchantment if you can get it out quickly.

Obviously you need lightning bolt.

If you wanted to run creatures and burn, run goblins.

Braid of Fire can be nice, but it's also tricky. You have to have reliable outlet sources to use the Braid's mana on during your upkeep, because it doesn't carry over past your upkeep phase.  The only other option you would have is to allow it to burn you at the end of your upkeep, then have a source to redirect any damage. Ultimately, you simply need to have outlets for the mana, regardless.

You do know that mana burn is gone right?

Nope. Wasn't aware. Haven't played tournaments in quite a while. If this is true, I don't like it.....another screwed up rule change.

Combat damage doesn't go on the stack anymore either. Both changes were effective once Magic 2010 was released.

A lot of people thought mana burn going away was a bad thing. Keeps enchantments like Braid of Fire being as dangerous as they have the potential to be. Just let the mana do whatever during your upkeep and when it's pumping out enough mana, cast Volcanic Geyser.

I'm still spiteful that manaburn is gone. Abolishing that rule negated the mechanics of many cards in the Mercadian Masques block.

Combat damage doesn't go on the stack anymore?!  Wth?  So, you can no longer block with Sakura-Tribe Elder, then sacrifice it to search for a basic land in response?

You can still block and then sacrifice, but the Sakura Tribe Elder won't do any damage. That can still be useful. If an opponent is attacking with a Krosan Cloudscraper, you can chump block with the Elder and then sacrifice it. Since the Cloudscraper doesn't have trample, it won't do any damage at all.

Frankly, I like the change. Being able to stack combat damage was somewhat unrealistic. Now it forces players to do a  bit more thinking with regards to certain cards like Sakura Tribe Elder. That is, does one trade with the opponent's creature, or use the ability?

Oh......that's always been that way.  You've always had to choose between the ability or the blocking damage.  I thought you meant that the blocking damage would kill the blocker before any ability could go on the stack.  I was gettin' all tore up.....lol.
