so i've recently become familiar with the form of magic called modern. so far i'm pretty impressed and i like that it seems to be a cheaper and more casual version of legacy.

pretty much i'm just interested in what you guys think of modern format and what experience you have with it.

Meh! There are only a few decks that are actually competitive, and its not much cheaper than legacy!

The sets included in modern are pretty much all the sets I hate.
  • The entire Scars of Mirrodin cycle
  • Rise of the Eldrazi
  • Eventide
  • Morningtide
  • Planar Chaos
  • Cold Snap
  • The entire Kamigawa cycle
  • The entire Mirrodin cycle
And then it cuts out right before the good sets.
  • The entire Onslaught cycle
  • The entire Odyssey cycle
  • Invasion
  • Planeshift
  • The entire Masquerade cycle
  • The entire Artifacts cycle
  • The entire Rath cycle
  • Weatherlight
  • Fallen Empires
90% of my cards are pre-modern
The old design was just better looking

I love it. There are so many cards to choose from. I don't like the old designs of the cards. To me, the new ones look better.

@ lin, the fact that you can only use the newer blocks can make for some interesting decks and gameplay, or so i'm told.

@ scotty, i really don't mind any of the card layouts, i just don't like white bordered. oh and old black card layouts are awesome.

what i dont like is there are 1000's of cards and people only play a small percentage of them..everyone looks up what the best deck in the format and plays that..casual its different..my theory is i would rather lose every game with a deck i built than win with a deck someone else built..but thats just me..and i have been playing since 1994...but in the end i do love modern..so many cards and combos and ideas..not restricted but having a smaller card pool to choose from...wow that was long winded...lol :)

For that very reason I truly do enjoy the deck challenges that we have on this site every now and then.

To be perfectly honest the concept of Legacy, Modern, and Standard are all kinda fail (Example 1: Net-decking wins it all. Example 2: Cards shoot up to borderline insane value. Example 3: Strategy? Umm...yeah...not so much...at all...in any concievable way. Example 4: Skill? Psh...see example 3...It pretty much comes down to who doesn't screw up the worst in mirror matches. Example 5: Diversity? Well I guess in the larger tournaments...but if your playing in a smaller area...yeah...sux to be you...)

The only way for an actual skillful environment to exist is via drafting. This way there is no real Metagame to define. It's just random cards that force players to make decisions about the cards that work for them. My personal fave home tournament type is where both player's recieve an intro pack of their choice and 2 booster packs. This allows for the random element as well as keeping everything fairly balanced so the newer players can grasp the concept.
