Title: Packs or Single Cards?

I've recently got into Magic within the past year and still consider myself pretty new to it, but I'm fascinated by it and really love the game. Within this past year I've easily spent a few hundred dollars on fat packs, booster packs, duel decks, etc. My question is, do most of you guys buy cards the way I do, or do you go online and just buy copies of the cards you want. I like the randomness and thrill of opening up packs to see what new cards I get, but its a bummer to get cards I already have seven of and don't use...

Opening packs will almost always lose you money, unless the set is new and there are overhyped overexpensive cards in it! Buy singles!

Buying packs are more fun. Buying singles are cheaper. That's all there is to it.

Let's not forget the best reason for packs: trading!

Leaving from the Kamigawa block and coming end at the end of Scars of Mirrodin made my trade binder almost useless. As soon as Innistrad came out, I started doing drafts of that set. Now I have a Snapcaster, Laboratory Maniac, and other foil rares that I can trade even at worse case store credit to get a bunch of things that I want.

Sure the higher priced things like Moxes you'll probably never be able to trade for, but those aren't the point. The TLDR is I think you should be trading if you are drafting (read as: buying packs)

Just the other day I bought a Rise of Eldrazi booster pack and got a Khalni Hydra and a foil It That Betrays (which I thought was a great deal for 4 bucks) On the other hand, I have enough Llanowar Elves and Naturalized to build a fort out of.

I would say do not waste your money on fat packs. I would also advise when new sets come out, buy packs.

Once you get an idea for a deck from the cards you got from your packs, round it out with singles so you have a fairly loaded deck that will be enjoyable to play.

Packs. Buy a box of packs, even. If you're married with kids just tell your spouse you are investing. With the new stuff coming out you might land yourself a Sorin. I saw that thing on Card Kingdom already going for somewhere around $80!

After you start a good collection you'll want to hit up singles for combos.

Or buy a sorin from the reasonable people on ebay who realize that he isnt jace.4....!

And yes, when a new set comes out, buy packs, if youre drafting, playing minimasters, or playing sealed, buy packs! Dont buy packs to pull cards though!

I was commenting on how crazy some cards can get in value even before it comes out. But yeah, eBay. Got a lot of deals on eBay. I think if you set up a PayPal account you can earn eBay Bucks to use every couple months. If you got the time to watch bids you can get stuff ridiculously cheap.

I usually spend 50 $ on singles from each new set as they come out for my decks and just buy packs for pack wars, drafts, and sealed games. One thing I love to do is buy a beginner's starter kit or fat pack and build a deck with just the kit or fat pack. It leads to a lot of fun gameplay.

I would suggest buying packs until you have a collection to have 3-4 decent decks at least, then buy singles to pump them up to higher standards, I wouldn't keep up with Standard format as you will quickly get discouraged re-buy/building your deck.

Also when buying singles, the most cost efficient way is to make a long list of things that you want, then go and find them on http://www.tcgplayer.com/ than buying in bulk from one seller, this saves you lots of money on shipping, and online stores almost always have the cheapest price.

Instead of buying packs, I suggest buying collections off of ebay (though never buy individuals) these tend to be a lot cheaper (though you don't get so many rares) I once got a 100+ cards for $0.99.
