Title: Combo vs. Synergy

As of late there has seem to be alot more comments of peoples posts that what what they posted is not a combo, but rather synergy.  But one think I have not seen in any of these posts is a defination of what synergy is., or for that matter what a combo even is.

Many players consider a combo to be a game changer and synergy to be a beneficial effect, but might not win you the game.  some say its not a combo if its from the same set its obviously synergy since they were ment to work together, others say they were ment to be used together so its a combo. Ultimatly, we develop our opions of what these are as we develop in the game.

But on sites like this those opions will clash.  So my question is... what is your defination of what a combo and synergy is?  I'm not looking for websters or WOTC's version, and I'm not looking for conversion, we are all entitled to our opion.  But just a simple description of an ideal.  Basically I would like someone who is told their post is not a combo to beable to go "ok , while I don't agree I can see why this person thinks this is synergy"

For me, a combo is the interaction of multiple pieces, while synergy is compability of those pieces.  As a result  I don't see a difference between the two...you need a combo to beable to create synergy and you need synergy to be able to create a combo.  Since they can't be without the other they must be the same

Your Thoughts?

I don't care whether it's a combo or synergy as long as it's not something obvious.

Generally, anything infinite is a combo for sure.

For one who makes comments things are not combos i'm suprised you don't have an opion.  So a follow-up then.  What do you define as obvious?

Turbine just likes to stir things up, thats why we like him so much.

Combo would be two or more cards working together to do something outside of there normal purpose.

Synergy would be two or more cards that work well with each other within there bounderies.

@Gericault

I agree with your opinion of combos. All combos pretty much are are fancy synergy.

Hey, I'm less antagonistic than I used to be. Sometimes, it's fun to stir up trouble though. (^_^)

I think the definition is the same. Synergy meaning work together, and combo meaning work together = this argument has no winner...for that matter 2 relentless rats work together and therefore are a combo and a synergy...

And I'm with 'Turbine on the controversy thing...

TEAM HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After being schooled by PinkiePie I do realize more the difference between the two. The best definition, for me, for synergy is Elves. My "combo" was basically like casting a white spell with Angel Feather out. Something that drops your jaw or, even better, the jaws of your opponents is combo material. Cards strung together from different sets for an infinite or strategy busting result, combo.

I would say that a combo is anything that goes infinite or has the potential to go infinite (Basalt+rings, as opposed to Helm+top+future sight)! Synergy is just effects that jive together!

I think that what many people don't realize, and what many of the older users know is that this site really isn't for combos. In fact, we really would rather see unique and creative synergy over boring, repeitive and only slightly modified (read as pointless) combo submissions that we've all seen a thousand times.

Definitely agreed. New ideas are the best.

In reality, any two cards together make, by definition, a combo. Hence the word combination. For the purpose of this site and how people feel I'm going to try and clarify.

Combos are essentially game winners. They perm lock, make infinite mana (for X card finishers), infinite damage, or remove your opponent's ability to win, such as having infinite life. If the combo comes together and can't be stopped, it's all over. Sometimes they do more than one of those things.

Synergy is just simply cards working together in general game terms.

For example, giving your opponent a swamp and having a swampwalker is a logical combination. These cards work well together. While turning someone's land into a swamp, making a swampwalker deal out unblockable infinite damage is.

Now that I've gone down this road and realized I have to post this, I need to clarify that synergy is not bad. Synergy can do a lot of things that are cool, but most of the people on this site are way above basic combos like Bottomless Pit/Black Vise so it gets flamed or seen as useless information.

I also know that people are going to disagree with me and that's cool. You asked my pitch on it and I'm giving it.
