if i had a mogg fanatic equipped to a mortarpod, could i use both card's effect simultaneously? does this question even make sense?

Yes: The question makes sense!
No: You cant activate them both! Sacrifice is a cost of the effect, so if theres no creature to sacrifice than the ability fizzles!

I can't really explain it in technical terms, but I know that you can't activate two sacrifice abilities at once.

Doesn't get more techincal then what pinkie wrote.

the sacrifice is a cost for both abilities.  If you pay the cost for one of them, the fanatic is already in the grave before you can pay the cost for the other.

However, and this is a nitpick about common game terms, when an ability "fizzles" it is already on the stack but the target has become illegal.  In this case it is not a fizzle since the cost can't be paid, the ability never happens

Fizzle is about as technical as you can get. Next to stack manipulation.
