What is the first step/phase on turn 1? Does the game start with an upkeep or a main phase?

(Please don't hate me, I've tried to find out with all the sources I have.)

If you are going first, you don't draw, so I believe you start in your main phase.

Scotty's right—you decide who goes first via die roll, coin flip, sub-game of Magic if you're so daring; then you draw your opening hand of seven cards (and mulligan if needed); then you go straight to your main phase.

Now, last I checked, you still have an untap, upkeep, and draw step, but you don't draw a card during your draw step.

Yeah, that was what I thought, too.

I'm with Lin and E-N-S on this one. Fer example, someone just Jokulhaups the board, at the beginning of your turn, you may not have anything to untap, but you do still have an untap phase. Ditto for upkeep phase...

The real question is: what situation in a game of magic would this be significant?

Give Magic time. There were a lot of irrelevant questions I had when I started that are very relevant now.

Yup, in the first turn of a game you still have the usual untap, upkeep, draw steps, just that if you are going first then you skip your draw.

In general there's no difference, but Karn Redeemed's ultimate could change that, since you could return to the battlefield things which enter play tapped, then untap them in your first turn (and note that they don't have summoning sickness because they were in play before your turn).

I just wanted to know, when this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMUTQO-mnIg

would work.

(It says "turn zero" in the title, but I know that this isn't true, since you can't use the cavern "before the game".)

The first time you get priority to do anything is during the first upkeep step of the game.

As you say, the guy in the video is wrong because you can't do anything before then, other than doing anything on 'if this is in your opening hand' actions.

Technically, you won't have had a turn yet if your Opponent goes first and you play out an 'I Win' combo during their upkeep, so I guess turn 0 is kind of true.

If you read "Turn 1 win" as "Win during YOUR first turn", that is true.^^
