like the title says, if someone plays a mana leak for instance, could I use misdirection or something like that to change the target of mana leak to mana leak itself?

I don't see why you couldn't—I'm pretty sure until the effect resolves, it's a valid target, though it would be a bit... I don't know, paradoxical to reflect a counter-spell upon itself.

No, you can't make a counter spell target itself. You can, however, make it target the spell that is redirecting it.

idk, I do know that you cannot cast a counterspell to counter itself (unless it was double negative) because the counterspell is not yet a valid target, but since your adding another spell on the stack, it does make it a valid target as you are doing it in response to it. I want to say yes, but you probably cannot do it.

I'm confused why you couldn't play a counter and have the counter target itself.

It is a spell and it is being played. The old wording for counter was counter spell as it is being cast, so I think it would apply since it has to choose it's target and then you just change the target to "when it resolves, counter this spell" and the spell resolving is itself.

Just my opinion.

Time for some comp rules fu :)

114.4. A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself.

114.6a If an effect allows a player to "change the target(s)" of a spell or ability, each target can be changed only to another legal target. If a target can't be changed to another legal target, the original target is unchanged, even if the original target is itself illegal by then. If all the targets aren't changed to other legal targets, none of them are changed.

the reason is that before you even cast the spell, there most be a legal target for the spell.. that is if it targets something...
