Title: Wirewood Symbiote...confusing!

I was playing a match against an elf deck, so I attacked with Goblin Lackey, the opponent declared to block with Llanowar Elves, until here, no problem. But in the moment of assign damage, he used the Symbiote ability to untap other creature and return the Llanowar Elves to his hand. So.... this is invalid because Llanowar received lethal damage, or Goblin Lackey remains (live or dead?) in the board with Llanowar returning to the hand of the opponent? 0.0

Under old rules, the Lackey would be dead and the elf in hand. (he could bounce the elf with damage on the stack)

Under the current rules, the Lackey is blocked, but not dead. (combat damage does not go on the stack any more, he would have to bounce the elf before damage is dealt)

EDIT: To clarify, there is no way to have your cake and eat it. He cannot have the elf deal damage and also get bounced (short of pump or giving it first strike) - if it deals damage, it also dies.

That's why I liked the old rules. I used the same concept except with Thopter Foundry.
