Title: What set did you start playing in?

The forums are really starting to pick up and new members are coming in.  As always we got a crazy bunch of Goblin Grenade targets as regular posters, which is a good thing I might add.

1.) My question is, when you started playing, what set was out?
2.) If you had your choice, what set would you have liked to have had started in?
3.) Do you play tournaments or just casually?  If you played tournaments, how did you do?

I'll go first,
I was introduced to Magic probably around Unlimited.  I remember some of the expansions coming out like Arabian Nights, but I really started playing in the worst time possible as the Dark was the current expansion.

I would have liked to have been as involved as I was then when Eldrazi and Jace came out.  I would've made some nasty decks in those sets.  I could've entirely skipped the Kamigawa era, but I wouldn't change the time I got into it because Black Lotus was still a cheap card and getting them signed was easy to do as well.  I actually got a signed Beta Black Lotus for a wedding gift!  It's also funny seeing Moxes that people were playing without sleeves getting ruined and the player not realizing that their cards were going to be worth big bucks down the road.

I did like tournaments, but I got addicted to seal deck tournaments where I did moderately well.

1) I started in the Lorwyn block.

2) I would have liked to have started in the original Mirrodin or Urza's Saga.

3) Both? I play in FNM, which certainly isn't competitive. I do drafts once a month.

2. I guess I cant really answer I've seen it all except lorwyn shadowmoor when the money was tight. Missed out on walkers. I was really messed up  by them.

3. Both, though I perfer casual to the tournament scene. People are friendlier

I started Playing when 9th edition game out. I like where I started. I play in both, usually top 15 or 30.

i started in 1 of the best sets: Tempest so i'm happy with where i started. As to tournaments and casual i do both but prefer casual because i like to teach new people how to play and in tournaments i rarely finish outside top 8.

I started with Ice Age.  I didn't last long then as I was young and couldn't get money for it. I quit shortly after and started again with 2010/Zendikar block.

I wish I was present for Lorwyn as I love elves.

I usually only play casually but tried a couple of tournaments. When my friend was beaten turn one with no lands played we decided to just have fun and not bother with the tournaments.

I was first introduced to the game during torment, playing on and off for years only aquiring a handfull of cards mainly from draft, however I did not start playing and building like I do until coldsnap.  So for all extensive purposes, I started in Coldsnap,

I wish I was playing hard during Ravinca, my friends and I still occasional draft ravinca for shits and giggles and its always alot of fun.  Currently I play both casual and tournment, though i prefer casual

1) I too started in Prophecy. I was so terrible, I remember being completely jipped out of my first few rares. I've tried to look up what ones they were but I can't remember lol.

2) I either wish I started back in Alpha, so I could sell all those cards and make some money lol, or theres always been something about the Alara block I liked. Probably because Alara Reborn was all multi-colored. When I first opened one of those packs I was quite pleasantly shocked.

3) I'll compete in Standard if I'm dragged to it, otherwise I'm Draft tournaments only. I don't like spending money, so I like that everyone starts with the same sort of cards, and it seems more skill-based in choosing then regular sealed.

Started playing in Lorowyn...been collecting since kamigawa....traded an @$$load of cards I wish I had kept...And I say screw doing the 1), 2), 3) thing...because I must be different or I will die...of boredom...I play in FNM's and other events from time to time...yep that's about it...not much else...well actually there is...to the person who told me trading thoughtsieze for chandra was a good deal f#$k you!

As far as sets I wish I had played in...none...because I wish I had better things to do than play magic...but I don't...so I guess...tempest...or the set we're in now...I'm phyrexian junkie...so yeah...that's about all I've got...as soon as phyrexians leave standard I''ll probably quit until we revisit them...

1) and 2) I started in the Onslaught block and i really liked to start in this block with his mechanisms and tribes, ah... the time that the pit fighter legends were really powerful...

3) I play casual and I play FNM. I really would like to play hard tournaments, but is very expensive: in standard, the prices of the great cards became huge and is a process that must continue months after months. Eternal, the most fun formats in my opinion, but to run the cards necessarily to win... much time, work and $$$.

i started playing during Alara block. I was a noob that whupped everybody else at my shop. I would have liked to start playing during original Mirrodin block.due to it having alot of cards I like. I play in anything I have the money for except draft cause It's not worth the money.

I started at Alara Reborn, but really got into the game at Rise of the Eldrazi. I wish that I could have started at Ravnica, because of all the good comments I have heard about it. I mostly play casually, but I usually play in Game Days. If an EDH or 2HG tournament pops up nearby, I'm there.

I got started when Worldwake came out.

If I had to choose a set, it'd definitely be Mirrodin or Lorwyn block.

I have been to a few FNMs and organized tournaments, but nothing really serious. Since I whipped everyone into next week, I don't really play anymore, I just build decks for sale. Of course, I will settle down to an Archenemy game (with no scheme cards for me) just for fun sometimes. It's neat how people coordinate their decks to play so well together. I remember I barely won against three Elf Decks. We lost track of their life at 1,364. Thank god I was playing Poison. ; )

@ Dying

Noooooo, you can't leave. You add color to this boring blue and white website.

Also, your need to "rebel" is pretty humorous.

wow, i started playing around '91 or '92. I just missed beta. It was actually still being sold but i never bought any of it. I stopped like right around homelands and picked it up again around zedikar i think. ABOut 2 yrs ago. I missed a lot of good stuff.

I just wished i never stopped. That and that i didn't trade some of my moxes and a Black lotus (white border, revised i believe) to my friend who sold them for cash while i was in the military. Luckily i still have my collection of all dual lands. 4 of each. I got them to make an actual elder dragon dual deck. I remember play edh with actually elder dragons. ha.

I did play in some tournies in the '90's and did okay. Middle of the pack. Mostly at origins or gen con. I'll still play in a local tourny for fun every once in awhile. but a wife and children get in the way. Though she lets me buy a box when each new set comes out so i guess its even. lol

I started playing during Homelands, which is where the heart never was.I bounced around sets due to cash and other things. I really did not start to play heavy until Invasion, one of my fav blocks. The others are Ravnica and Shards.

I started playing tournements during onslaught which also gave me a hate for Wellwisher. I burned all the Wellwisher cards that i could find and somehow a playset survived hidden in my collection. My wife took them from me immediately after because I was pulling out my lighter.

Honestly, I wish that I had started at least in 3rd edition just so I could have the dual lands. Not for the price value but im a multicolor deck junkie. Two or more colors is my version of crack.

I prefer to play Legacy formate. I hate draft, but will play if im told to by my wife. I try to avoid Standard like plague rats due to the fact there is usually only one deck that if your not running you will not place well at all.

Oh and I HATE Planeswalkers. Worst idea since Vanguard.

I first bought cards when Mirage was out, but didn't really start playing until Urza's Saga.  the Urza's block will always have a place in my heart.  but I was on and off for awhile, so i most recently started buying cards again in Alara.

I wish I started playing at alpha tho.  just for the broken cards throughout those times and collecting purposes.

I play both, but no serious tournys.  i prefer casual.

Good ol' Revised. Back when Serra Angel and Shivan Dragon were the big, bad boys. I stopped playing around Visions or Mirage, then got back into it at the end of the Alara block.

I don't understand how people liked kamigawa after having a the very interesting original worlds of onslaught and invasions, suddenly we find ourselves in asia with weird themes that never caught on.

@ dakkon,
I started playing in high school which was '91-'95 for me. I was playing hard in '93/'94 and that was unlimited. end of sophmore start of junior year. But we played a little before that. So i guess it was like '92ish??? Maybe i was off a little or got my years wrong. I remember get getting a few packs of Antiquities and Legends. I also remember buying those over a few packs of beta thinking "Why would i want to pay for a beta version of a product?" Well the packs sold and i never saw them again and then started buying unlimited. It was has to track down the sets then too.

Edit : Yeah beta came out in '93 so i guess i was off in my years. It was a long time ago.

Magic: the Gathering was officially released August 5, 1993.

If you would like to see the official timeline, go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_sets

As you can see, the Timeline for the first 3 sets was super fast.
By the end of 1993, Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited had already come out and at the same time of Unlimited you had Arabian Nights.

I was introduced to MTG during Revised... Played heavily until kids started getting born in our group. We slowed down severely just after the Weatherlight stuff. Once the kids were old enough we started playing again but we all got back into it heavy at Shards.

Alara block my favorite by far (I looooove multicolor).

I'm fine where i began and we only do tournaments when new sets come out... then we do a draft.

I'm loving EDH format...brings back the flavor of old school playing.

1. I started playing at Alara Reborn. I was at a summer camp and a bunch of kids were playing this card game (I was 12) and I was like "Really? First Yu-Gi-Oh then Pokemon now whatever the hell this is!? That looks really stupid, I dont wana waste my well earned allowance (lol, its funny how allowances dissapear after your 12) on this game" Well as time went on I started to wonder about this game. I watched a few matches and was it started to look really interesting. So I asked the main guy who was playing (the best player at camp) if he could teach me how to play. He was delighted and I was hooked after 10 minutes. He even gave me a deck. So then two months after that I had easy spent well over $150 on cards. I played through the Zendikar block and played though M10 and M11 then I played through SOM and MBS (which was one of my favorite sets) and played in my first FNM when New Phyrexia was realeased. Since then I have gone to at least 10 more FNM's.

2. I am very happy where I started! I wouldnt want to start anywhere elese.

3. I play lots of FNM and my record is usually around 2-4 (2 wins 4 loses) to 3-2

Started around Scourge... Started joining FNM around Mirrodin Block... Joined a Vintage tournament just for fun... Got eliminated by a Goblin welder deck... i got him down to 1 life and I got controlled by mindslaver... and there's just nothing else to do... can you believe i'm using a non-aggressive elf deck... if i have been using an aggressive elf deck... i would've won....

Fifth Edition.  Magic is so much cooler now than it was back then.  I really believe that planeswalkers helped the game signifcantly.  At first I thought they were seriously overpowered, but actually, no they are not.  It changed the way people play.

I don't think of it as better or worse, just different.  People said cards started getting under-powered and that is because they were comparing them to other cards and in reality there were only 10 cards in the Power 10 (funny how that worked out), of the hundreds of cards that came out.

Imagine if Eldrazi were in Alpha!  lol
