When i posted a reply on Twogunkid's recent post "Indispensible cards", I just remembered that if you equip paradise mantle to Ornithopter, you will get a budget Birds of Paradise at the cost of card slot in your deck. Here are some of the advantages of Ornithopter+Paradise Mantle over Birds of Paradise.

1. Budget
Birds of Paradise - $5.84 from M10
Ornithopter ($0.21 from M10) + Paradise Mantle($0.91 from Fifth Dawn) = $1.11

2. Casting cost
Birds of Paradise - Requires one green mana
Ornithopter + Paradise Mantle - Requires one colorless mana.

3. Toughness
Birds of Paradise's Power/Toughness - 0/1
Ornithopter + Paradise Mantle Power/Toughness - 0/2

The only disadvantage is see is the card slot that you will need to sacrifice because if you want to have for of each then you need to sacrifice the 4 card slots.

What do you think? is it worth sacrificing the 4 card slots for the given advantages of Ornithopter + Paradise Mantle?

It would really depend on your deck type honestly. If I were playing an artifact based deck then definitely, due to the amount of search spells you could cast and affinity spells, but if I were to build something like a naya deck, I would really just spring for the birds, because there's a better chance of me pulling one card rather than two together.

also, you must take into consideration, that every good deck will have a way to deal with artifacts, so your whole mantal/copter, is actually easier to destroy.  also, a creature kill, or a artifact kill will deal with your thing.

You both have valid points but yeah i also think it depends on the type of deck you are using...

yeah a deck with minimal, or no green, most certainly would not benifit form birds, but a deck primally using green for the other colors, would work well
