Kobolds
We were discussing the other day what was the first extinct race in Magic: The Gathering.  Of course everyone had a comment, but I had the answer.  Kobolds are the Dodo of Magic.

Kobolds were introduced in the Legends set.  The predominant Kobolds were 0 cost red 0/1s, which meant in a great set you were basically a token.  In total only six cards were created and only in the Legends set.  Three were red and one colorless and gave the Kobolds only a bonus and the 3 others were identical zero casting cost 0/1s that were considered to take up space in booster packs.

Things that spelled the Kobold demise were plentifull.  For one, the Ornithopter existed.  The Ornithopter was a 0/2 Flyer for 0 casting cost and it was an artifact, which meant it was immune to the number one creature removal of the time, Terror.  The Kobold couldn't compete, which how do you motivate someone to use a card that can be beat by an Ornithopter?  Not to mention they were in a set with a bunch of legends coming off the Arabian Night set which had no problem dealing with a pesky 0/1.

The following sets didn't do much to help the Kobold either.  The Dark introduced a bunch of fun cards and Fallen Empires introduced a good group of Soldiers, Goblins, Thrulls, and Thallids.  Goblins became predominant and edged out the not-so-edgy Kobold and with no Kobold breeding cards like Thrulls, Thallid, and Goblins had the Kobold died off.  As Magic moved into a new age the Kobold was forgotten.

Will the Kobold ever return?  I think we can mark the Kobold a lost race in the land of Dominaria, but we know they won't be truly forgotten.

In my dreams the kobolds come back, and they are stronger than ever, more leaders more cool stuff.  But alas I must always awake from these dreams, in order to make my kobold deck competive, in needed to create my own kobolds, (I swear they are somewhere) fortunately the group I play with isn't familiar with ledgends and homelands, so they have yet to realize that I'm using fake cards. . .

Someone should write R&D a letter....i would so play a bitchin Kobold Warmaster 2RR, Haste, other Kobold creatures you control get haste and +1/+1, 3/1....and before you argue with me don't, i have watched deathnote, fox news, and Mcghiver, logic is officially my bitch.

What Kobolds didn't have that everyone else had was some sort of Kobold generator.

Goblin Warrens and Goblin Grenade made Goblins a household name.
Thallids/Fungus had built-in generators and everyone had a use for Spore Flower.
Thrulls had Breeding Pit to feed all those sacrifice a creature big black baddies and that alone made them famous, but add in Hymn to Tourach with Mindstab Thrull and well the Hymn made discard decks famous.

Kobolds on the other hand got nothing.  They got three cards.  One gave them +0/+1 and Trample... Where's the damn logic in that!

If Kobolds had ANY ability at all such as flying or trample they would've seen action.  Someone would have seen an opportunity like Hatred or Howl from Beyond, but without that nobody is going to take them seriously.

kobolds got a small generator in time spiral in the form of  Kher Keep.

and since they could be in play during time spiral they are not the first extinct creature

gericault5 - So you saw a lot of people playing that one TimeSpiraled Kobold?  I think not.  lol

They may have been reprinted, but I doubt they saw use.  Other than wallpaper maybe. lol

They've had no new card since Legends so I think that counts as gone.

How much play kher keep saw is illrelevant though in my meta you did see it as chump blockers or fodder sometimes with pyrohemia. My point is kher keep was a card intoduced in time spiral that created kobolds. To parapharse teferi on the card their still here.

But if your basing your criteria on the last time a new card with that type was printed then the first creature to go the way of the dodo was cockatrace. It was only printed in alpha

Since Gercault wants to get technical then I'll list criteria.

1.) The theme potential.  Could you make a Kobold deck?
Of course you could.  There were enough Kobold cards and Kobold targeting cards.
2.) With that in mind, how many decks used it and still use it today? (there are picture of Dodos but that doesn't mean they aren't extinct, they need to see action so that is actually the heart of it)
In Legends the Kobold didn't see much action and nobody uses the theme today.  You have to admit you won't be playing any Kobold decks because well, there aren't enough cards around.
3.) When were they last printed?
Time Spiral, which was basically going back in Dominaria time, but other than that reprint and one new card (which was actually a land) they got no new cards with creature type Kobold since Legends.

If we take what you said into account (a single card, single creature type), then Leper (Abu Jafar from Arabian Nights) would be the first, but being a lonely one card I don't think a Leper deck could be a viable option and besides, the Leper deck wouldn't run to well.  And the Cockatrice was reprinted in Spiral as well so by your own reference to Spiral would not apply.

I did miss that they made a new card in Spiral and it was a generator, but unfortunately introducing the city now is a little late to save the Kobold.  Being extinct doesn't mean that it won't make an appearence.  The Kimodo dragon is a dragon, but I doubt you'll see a Shivan Dragon walking down 23rd St in New York!  lol

Kher Keep Flavor Text: "They're still here? The cockroach may have finally met its match."  —Teferi.

                         -Time Spiral Era-

They will always be around but not fighting. They never said they went extinct they just don't focus on them anymore.

I have actually seen kobolds played not that long ago. They were paired with cloudstone curio to make a storm base
But all technical aspects aside (and you should know by now I'm technical) I will give you kobolds were the first race that went over multiple cards to stop seeing printing.
And yes you will not see dragons walking down 23rd st. You have to go to Mott street to see that :)

The Kobold may not see much play these days, but that's only because Skullclamp got banned in Legacy.  Having a bunch of free 1 toughness guys that you can equip skullclamp to equals "1: draw two cards".  Especially if you play it with Enduring Renewal.

You know, this is the first group that I ever got support to the Kobold plight.

With a return of Memnite we should tell Wizards to bring them back.

I don't think it's far fetched to ask for a 0 cost 1/1 red creature!  It's more targetable than the artifact version for sure.  Make them like the Eldrazi spawn for a set.  Make a couple of creatures that attract Kobolds, if you will, then reprint the Kherr Keep card.
