So I was thinking, there are a bunch of use who play online via mws, cockatrace, or some other means.  How about we have a little tournment?  Here was what i was thinking...

Sign up will be a 5 day period, after that whoever signed up would be paired up with someone, the players will have a week to play their 3 round match,  it will be elimination so the winner will then be paired with the winner of another match, they will then have a week and so on to the last man is standing.

This will only be for fun so no prizes.

Thoughts?

Sounds good, but work/school/other things can lead to matchups being hard to continue. Not to mention we would need a judge to sit in on the matchups. I'm not saying no, because I'm always up for magic, but we need to plan this out a little more first.

Thinking standard to start but we can discuss that. Right now this is more about the functioanality of it and any issues that might arise

@dying-good points, I was t5hinking the schedules might be a problem which is why I would give the week to play. If your making the obvious attempt to set something up you would move on. As for the judge we would all have to play cockatrce to make that happen. Since there is no prize and its for fun I would say casual rules apply. Work it out betwwen you and your opponent and then bring it to forum later. Or pause the mat5ch and resume later

I was thinking that we could name the different mathups numerically. I.E. match 1, then after the players have been decided, post your matchup as a topic to update info, such as who won what match(s) and how did the final match go, and who's moving into the next matchup. If a competitor makes no effort to respond to their opponent via the topic within 7 days they are disqualified (I think thats what gericault meant by a week.)

Now for my final concern(and the most critical one)...what do we name the league?

I, personally, don't know any people who play competitive standard. I do, however, know many people who play EDH regularly. I was hoping that there could be a side tournament of sorts, with EDH being the format of play. I know that it would be difficult to find a point in all of the competitors' schedules to play a four-player game, but it would be good to try. I think that this tournament is a great idea, and would like to participate in (almost) any way possible.

(I will be free from 7:30-12:00PM EST most days in the next two weeks)

of course, we can do different formats... like FNM, Thursday extended, or something... but that would mean more games than we can ever constantly track...

I wouldn't mind doing an EDH especially multiplayer.

Which brings us to the final question, what do we want to do.  Standard, Extended, Legecy, Tribal, Block, 1vs1 EDH etc...  Right now I'm leaning to standard, block, or edh

I say, re-start the deck building challenges and have a tournament on whatever the challenge is. . .

just wondering, will any of the engines we use for the tournament support EDH format?

we could always put the commander directly onto the battlefield directly.

I'm all for the deck building challanges to resume.

I play EDH on Cockatrice at least once a week, and people usually put their generals in their sideboards when they build their decks. When the game starts, generals are dragged onto the stack from the sideboard and stay there until they are cast.

I assume that many of the users of MTGCombos play EDH or have EDH decks, and I'm sure that they would enjoy playing against their fellow combo posters. If the tournament is EDH it would definitely be better if the games were multiplayer (hopefully 4 player), but 1v1 is a lot easier to schedule.

Bringing back the deck building challenges seems good, but it just takes up more time to build the decks. We could be using that time to schedule games, or play them. I think that it would be better to just decide on a format, schedule the games, and play them.

Also, how would eliminations work? Would it take one match loss, or two to be out of the tournament? I know that double elimination would take more time, and have even more scheduling that would be needed, but I think that it is better than single elim.

One last thing: Really Jester? I thought that you were better than making redundant posts. :3

@hungry-what we could do is announce the challange midway through the tournment so people have time to build decks before the next one.  Personally I like this idea as it really explores deckbuilding in a greater degree, as not everyone will have the same build, even if they are the same color.  also I am all fore multiplayer edh, but maybe we should get 1 on 1 working first

As for the elimations I was orginally thinking single round.  ie you lose 2 out of 3 games you lose the match and your out.  The problem with this is if your out the first round it would suck to sit around the next few weeks till the next one.  Instead what about a simple point system, you win the match(or opponent doesn;t show) you get 10 points, you lose you get 5, 0 points if no show.  everyone plays each round.  Maybe the one with the highest score choose the deck building challenge for the next tournament.

So for this tournament it seems in terms of format some people want deck building challanges and mentioned edh, so how about we put it to a vote for 1 of the following

1)  Planeswalker EDH - planeswalker is the general

2)  Peasant Standard - obvious

3)  60 card Acid Magic - combination of pauper, prismatic, and singleton

4)  Straight Standard - no m12, sorry its not out yet

5)  Mechanical threat - the first deck challenge i did, tribal mechanic

I'd like to put in a 6th option. And vote for it if I may. (If not then I'd like to cast my vote for mechanical threat, because that was the easiest.

6)Regular EDH, because it was good enough then, and good enough now.

If we're going to play EDH somebody is going to have to give me the rules, but my vote goes to the challenges

@Lin-everything you need to know about EDH is here http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php also which of the 6 do you choose for this one

@dying-ok EDH is in, however, I think for people like Lin and others who have not played it before, we might want to consider making the generals mono colored, it would be easier for the deck building, as well as keep experience levels on a relatively even field

Well if you think it's to complicated, then I'm all for the mechanical threat idea. It's just that I recently came into a TON of EDH fodder, and it's got me kind of wrapped up in the EDH side of things...god I love City of Brass...
