I'm sure everyone knows Transcendence but here it is in case you don't.  I like how it auto added it.

So I wanted to take a close look a this card and honestly, I don't get it.  3WWW casting cost seems way to much for a self-destructive card.

For instance, just to put it in play means you are above 0 life.  So lets say you now get hit with a 1/1 creature you effectively just took 2 damage instead!  Even though you're going backwards, you're going backwards twice as fast!

From what it appears losing the game from having 0 life or less would never be a problem with this card, so it's a redundant entry.

So now you've spent a lot of mana and on a card that means you can no longer use any life gaining cards and any self-damaging cards are now going to hurt you even more!

At the end of the day I chalk this card up with Rust on the important scale.

It is simple really, when you go down to low life, you play transendance, than when you get to high life, you bounce it, then when you get low again. . . risky but potent.

it was meant to save you when you're low in life... and since it's white, you can just destroy it if you don't need it anymore...

No because the life gain is a trigger ability that goes off when you take damage.  so if your at 10 when your hit with the 1/1 you go to 9 then the life gain occurs taken you to 11. so you do go backwards at the same rate

No because the life gain is a trigger ability and losing at 0 life is a state based effect so if you were at 1 life and took any life loss you would lose before the life gain occured.  that line prevents that.

Lin and Shaki are both right about the card its a way to reset your life total, granted in a backwards direction.  It's also a johnny card at heart which is a big part of its appeal

gericault5 - that was a great explanation.

By the way, what is a Johnny card?

Johnny refers to the three types of magic players. Johnny who is a combo player, spike who is the tournament meta-netdecker, and Timmy, he plays huge creatures (Some call this the noob, but I think valakut  technically has a hint of Timmy in it, in addition to it's combo esque theme. Oddly enough it covers all three player types, due to it's spike nature. Yeap, valakut definitely has it all...too bad it doesn't have enough to handle karate griefer! Suck on that! Lotus Cobra....no wait....snakes don't have lips....DANG IT!!!!!!! Why do I always insult myself.... T.T WAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
