I just  attended my first FNM. (Yes I finally found a good play group.) So my question for you folks is, When did you attend your first FNM and what was it like?

Early 2010. Not really odd. Wasn't my first tournament ever and I was just running my Vampires.

haven't yet, I keep being asked to come, but I hate competing with decks that use cards past the alara cycle.  And besides my play group is plenty fun.

Lin, I would definitely recommend it. It's a good way to make new friends and it is very fun. Plus you always win a door prixe.

It was planarchaos right before the release of future sight. A mad house at Other Realms (now out of business) My best friend and I played a lot of ante games, and I ran into the first true time I became a Johnny, I won an anted battle of wits and since then I can only build decks with some amazing combo in them

My first experience with a friday night magic tourny was a bit tough. See, I stared playing magic in 93 at 7. My brother and I had seen a coulple of people playing in a comic book shop and wanted to be like the older "cooler" kids(lol). We begged our parents for cards and got a heap of them. I learned to play in a loose casual enviroment where the rules were vague and unclear. So one night in 1999 at 14 years old I entered my first FNM thinking I had an edge. I got my DCI card and I was ready to rock. But I was made fun of and treated like an idiot. I didnt truely understand all the rules and what was type 2 legal.Or what type 2 was for that matter. lol. I had started young but never really learned well. So I quit magic for a while and played yugioh. That was just not as good and I missed MTG. I tried again when the Mirrodin block began. I met some of the best friends I have ever had there. It was an awesome expirence and I feel the same enjoyment and fellowship here with you folks. And your "It had to be asked" posts Jester. They bring a unity among us I feel.

Well it's not quite like a poll, but it does the trick. I like hearing about other people's experiences, and to be honest I learned much from my first fnm, even though I didn't win a single matchup. I even lost to a random off-color w/g control deck and someone I beat online on a regular basis. It taught me that the metagame is regional, and thanks to a really cool player, I now know how to play my r/b reala infect a lot better than I had been playing it. I know some people may have had a negative FNM, and for that I sincerely apologize if it stirred up any bad memories.

My first fnm was actually a booster draft. My first draft actually so I didn't know th art yet so I ended up picking cards that I thought were cool or would work in other decks. As a result i passed up good limited cards for format jank. Ended up getting my ass handed to me being unable to play half my cards cause I couldn't find the mana. It was fun though I still play with some of the people I met there

My first FNM was a month after Shards set was released, and over here in NZ, all our FNMs are drafts of the last block. It was my first competition, but I knew most of the people playing, went 1-1-1, I had a bye for the last round, but overall it was pretty awesome, since then, I fell in love with restricted and have been drafting at FNMs as much as I can.
