Yes, if your life total becomes a certain amount, you gain or lose the appropriate amount for your life to become the new total.

Example : You are hit with Sorin's second ability while you are at 3 life, and you have an Ajani's Pridemate in play. You gain 7 life, giving the Pridemate a counter.

I'm pretty sure "losing" or "gaining" life is different than your life "becoming" something. But, I'm not entirely sure and have no source to back it up. I'm about 80% positive. :)

Scotty- Hungry is correct, any changes to your life total is considered a loss or a gain

117.5. If an effect sets a player’s life total to a specific number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up with the new total.

Well, now I am 100% sure I was wrong. :)
