so i was just reading the new phyrexia spoiler and began to wonder how the game creators come up with character names. where did they get elesh, karn, jace beleren, phyrexians, urza, mishra, mirri, or any other names from the history of mtg? some are anagrams (liliana vess=a villianess) or modifications of other names (elspeth=elizabeth), but many are gibberish.

Some come from old/forgotten/unknown words. For example, I would recommend a card called Xenocide:

Xenocide UUU8

Choose a creature type. Exile all creatures of that type from the game. Then search your library for any cards with that creature type and exile them. Repeat this process for your opponent(s).

Roots in Xenocide:

Xeno-Different
Cide-Kill

The meaning of Xenocide is the utter annihilation and extinction of a species.

The Dnd side of me wants to say...RANDOM NAME GENERATOR! but that's probably incorrect...but then again these are the same people who made dnd so who knows.
