I noticed that most of the creatures in standard only have strong static abilities or triggered ones... not much strong activated abilities...

Haha, this is going to make me sound like a n00b, but activated abilities are the ones where the creature taps to use it, is it not?

Essentially yes, but there's more to it then that. Activated abilities are of the form 'Cost: Effect'.

Sometimes the cost will be 'tap this creature', e.g. on Llanowar Elf.

Sometimes it'll be a mana cost, e.g. Shivan Dragon and 'R: This gets +1/+0 until end of turn'.

There are other costs, etc. But anything with cost: effect is an activated ability.
