Title: EDH deck question

I was just invited to an EDH game and I'm rather new to the format.

I understand that there is a 100 card limit (no duplicates of non-land cards).

I understand you have to select a general, and lands and spells have to correspond to the general's colours.

Is there anything I'm missing? And what's the point of the general?

Any tips or recommendations?

This is good website for rules and stuff. Your general gives base to the entire deck, like, for example, my Sharuum deck has plenty of things to resurrect like Scourglass and Mindslaver.

Can I choose a flip card like Night Eyes the Desecrator as my general?

I have heard of people using a morph card as a general and being able to play them as morph and then fliping them.

The total of the deck is 99+1 general making the total = 100

Now a good question would be if you can use Haakon from cold snap and if so How?

That would be interesting if you couldn't play Haakon.

Which do you think is a better choice for general: Phage the Untouchable, or Baron Sengir?

Phage, I can't tell if that is sarcasm or what? Baron would probably be better.

phage will lose you the game as soon as you cast her from the General Zone. so no phage. lol

and if you want a good monoblack general, try Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief or Geth, Lord of the Vault

So does the fact that it has a black mana symbol in its text not matter? And could I use a Drudge Skeletons with the same general?

Actually, I'm not sure about my previous answer. I found a Thelon EDH, but someone said that it was an illegal general below. I would stay clear just in case. I doubt that you could use Drudge Skeletons even if he was legal, because the generals mana cost is the deciding factor.

I'm just making this up, but maybe you can use cards that have kinda the same costs as the activated abilities of the general.

Example: Thelon of Havenwood - Cranial Plating -- I think this should be OK, because they both have the black in the activation only.

I do know, however, normally Cranial Plating can only be played if your general has a black man symbol in it's mana cost.

1)you can not use night eyes as a general, or any flip cards as they are not legendary in their orginal unflipped state

2)  since EDH is a casual format some places might let you start with haakon in the grave rather then command, other then that. I can not think of any way to play haakon, As for phage I have played againest a deck with her as a general, he used PA to prevent the lose and some of blacks counter cards such as nethervoid to counter phage so she went into the grave and then used some return to hand deals

3) thelon can't be played as a general due to the black symbol in the ability, the only symbols that can be on the cards is the color symbols in the mana cost, for this same reason rhys the exiled can't be used as a general. cranial platting can't be used either because of the black mana symbol.  however you can play them both in a Vhati deck as his cost contains both symbols

The point of the general is that it's one card in 100 you're absolutely guaranteed access to each game (costs prohibited) and you will most likely have access to throughout the game. Because of this, many players choose to build around their general in some way. For instance, my Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker deck has a lot of power-1 utility creatures and powerful sac outlets, because I know I'll have access to Shirei each game and his ability turns power-1 creatures and sac outlets into deadly recurring combinations and insane card advantage. You couldn't put another general in Shirei's place and have a very effective deck because the deck's made to work around Shirei.

On the other hand, you could pick a general solely based on their colors. Vorosh the Hunter, for example, is the only choice in his colors, and they're arguably the strongest color combination in the format.. Yet Vorosh's ability isn't all that impressive or fun. Many Vorosh players seldom cast their general throughout a game.
