I think a combo is defined in a card game as two or more cards with a great level of synergy or that can grant a winning condition. Example 1: Phage the Untouchable and Whispersilk Cloak. While to most  this is viewed as common sense rather than an actual combo, it actually fits the description of a combo, due to the ability to instantly kill an opponent.  Example 2:  Giant Growth and Nettle Sentinel. While this may not be a gamewinner, it can still be called a combo because both cards synergize well. Giant growth can now grant Nettle Sentinel "vigilance", or untap him to make a surprise 5/5 blocker on your opponent's turn.

Synergy is 2 or more elements working together, a combination is 2 or more elementals working together.  There isn't a difference between the two.  I think people think there is a difference because of the way people play when they are using a combo as the win-con.  You can easily have a synergy/combo in an arrgo deck, however, its purpose is to help get as many creatures out or help what you have out.  however, your usually not concerned if you don't pull the necessary cards as your not relying on it to win. On the other hand,  when you play a combo as a win-con you tend to be more defensive as you try to find your cards, if you don;t draw them you usually lose.
