The more I think about it, it's nearly the same thing. Well, it's not infinite, but it is great.

Question is, how would you present this combo ideally?

Plains, Serra Ascendant ► <basic land>, Rest for the Weary ► Lone Missionary; or
Plains ► Plains, Lone Missionary ►<basic land>, Rest for the Weary, Serra Ascendant ?

It's a good combo, but either way, this would be almost useless against a red deck specifically... especially if your opponent drops things like Lightning Bolt, Blazing Salvo, Chain Lightning, Shard Volley or Lava Spike on the first turn.

irrelevently it is still life gain, and the ascendant is still in play, which is why I agree with Turbine about the synergy thing.

A combo is more of something that works with two or more cards to create something a LOT greater than the individuals. Synergy is less great.

there is no difference between synergy and combo.  synergy is an interaction between 2 or more elements.  a combo is an interaction between 2 or more elements

I tend to think that synergy is one or more cards interacting with a type of cards (such as life gain cards), where as a combo is one or more cards interacting with one or more other cards.

This of course is still a vague definition, which is why I feel that it really doesn't matter.

The Ascendant is meant for life gain.

and Freed from real and intruder alarm are ment to untap creatures, so are pairings with those cards synergy
