It's a functional reprint. It's so it goes along better with current themes (or lack thereof).

Kodama's Reach and Cultivate have differences...
1. You can search for 1 basic land with Cultivate...
2. Kodama's Reach is an arcane spell...
But Ambition's cost and Ancient Cravings have the same mana cost, same ability...
The only difference, Artist, Expansion where it came from including expansion symbol, Name and of course the obvious card layout...

it used to be that you couldnt use Portal cards in regular MTG sanctioned events, so they would print some of the cards from portal in normal sets with different names. then when they stopped making portal (boooo) and they allowed it in sanctioned events, it lost its purpose
