The phrase "if you do" means that the text proceeding it is a cost the needs to be paid when the ability resolves. Since you can't pay the cost, you do not get the effect. S no untap or extra combat

Damn, thought the attaching the breath would be sufficient for paying cost...

You know better than that. All costs need to be paid in full, partial payments are not allowed.
