This combo will also require any creature you want to act as fodder for the first Spirit token. As long as it is not Teysa or Blood Artist, any creature will do.
Will Teysa in play, cast Darkest Hour, turning all creatures into Mono-Black. Because of Teysa's ability, all of your Black creatures, when they die, grant you a free 1/1 Flying White Spirit (That is now Black instead of White because of Darkest Hour).
Using Ashnod's Altar, or any sac engine as a replacement, sacrifice some worthless creature and get a free token. Sacrifice that token, get another token. Sacrifice that token... get the point?
With Blood Artist out, it will slowly drain your opponent's life away as you continue to sacrifice tokens. Blood Artist can be replaced with any card that has an effect when a creature dies, but Blood Artist is a cheap and reliable choice.
There are other uses. Even without Blood Artist, you will get infinite mana with Ashnod's Altar. Basically, the real combo is Teysa and Darkest Hour, the other cards are there to support it.
