A way to use the mana from Food Chain / Misthollow Griffin to cast other stuff than creatures:

Use the Chain / Griffin piece in your 1st main phase to cast the Griffin multiple times until you reached a sufficient number of mana suitable to cast a BIG Ivy Elemental.
Counter the Ivy spell with your Mana Drain.
At your 2nd main Phase add the cmc of the Ivy spell as colourless mana to your poll and cast or activate what you want. E. g. you could load the Helix or activate the Magma Mine.
